An oblique view of Smith Hall before demolition of the residence hall occurred, June 16, 2026. Built in 1957, Smith Hall was demolished in Summer 2026 as part of the campus master plan with the site converted into green space. Smith Hall was named in honor of J. Archy Smith, a dean of the university and popular math professor. Smith came to Stetson in 1900 after teaching at the University of Chicago and remained a professor at Stetson until shortly before his death in 1925. During the 2023 campus housing master planning process, an analysis determined the residence hall would need extensive renovation that would only address appearance and not function. Due to the type of construction, there would be limited ability to modify and modernize student room layouts. As the first phase of the campus housing master plan, Lynn Hall, housing 305 students in the heart of campus, opened in January with new amenities and a mix of room styles. With the demolition of Smith Hall, Stetson will have nine residence halls, 13 fraternity and sorority chapter houses, and four apartment complexes. In the long-term campus master plan, the Smith Hall site is slated for a future Greek Village.
