A photograph taken by Gary Monroe on October 26, 2025 at an Open House event at the Edith I. Starke Elementary School's new facility, located at 725 S. Thompson Ave, replacing an old one at 730 S. Parsons Ave. Edith I. Starke Elementary School, previously known as Parsons Street School, was built in 1956 on land that was previously a pecan grove. In 1962, the school was renamed after its first principal, Edith I. Starke, a prominent figure in DeLand and a strong advocate for school integration. She began teaching at Euclid High School in 1934 and became one of the first Black principals to lead an integrated school, serving as Parson Street Elementary School principal from 1957 to 1964. Electrolytes Charity Club is a nonprofit in DeLand that provides scholarships for schools in the area.
