A photograph taken by Gary Monroe at the Charles P. Bailey Sign Dedication on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at 4:30 pm, at the corner of Edison Dr. Ext. and the original Edison Drive in DeLand. The sign celebrates Charles P. Bailey, one of the Tuskegee Airmen's most decorated combat fighter pilots during World War II and Florida's first African American fighter pilot. A Florida native, Bailey attended Bethune-Cookman University for two years on a full football scholarship, before transferring to the Tuskegee Institute for its stellar aviation program. He flew 133 missions over Europe and North Africa during World War II, and the US Army Air Force awarded him four Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
