Stetson Team Wins Workers'
Compensation Competition
Third-year Stetson students Carol
McMurry and Michelle Vitt won first place
in the first annual student moot court
competition sponsored by the Florida
Workers' Compensation Institute. The
competition, open to law schools in Florida
and south Georgia, was held at the forty-
third annual convention of the Florida
Workers' Compensation Institute at the
Peabody Hotel in Orlando on September
27-28, 1988.
Seven schools entered the competition,
which required that contestants brief
and argue the appeal of a workers' compensation case. The preliminary rounds in
the single-elimination tournament were

judged by panels of deputy commissioners,
while Judges Richard W. Ervin III, Winifred
L. Wentworth, and E. Earle Zehmer of the
First District Court of Appeal presided
over the final round. Stetson's team defeated Florida State in the opening round,
Miami in the semifinals, and Mercer in the
finals.
The competition problem raised issues
of choice of law in the compensation area
and of wage loss. Ms. McMurry and Ms.
Vitt were aided in their understanding of
these complex matters by the vigorous
questioning they received in practice
rounds from Professors Mark Brown, John

Cooper, and Michael Finch, Adjunct Professor Walter Crumbley, and Tampa lawyers Susan Fox and James Young. The
team was coached by Professor Robert
Batey. Stetson alumnus Karl Pearson also
assisted by opening his law firm's library
to McMurry and Vitt forsome last-minute
research the night before the final round.
Carol McMurry and Michelle Vitt are
members of Stetson's Moot Court Board,
positions they earned through a rigorous
competition last spring. Ms. McMurry is
also a member of Stetson's Mock Trial
Board; in June of this year she and her
partner Charles Samarkos placed first in
the annual mock trial competition sponsored by the Florida Bar. Ms. Vitt is also a
member of the Stetson Law Review.
