FOUNDATION CHANGES NAME TO HONOR DANA Soon after Charles A. Dana died in 1975, the directors of The Law Center Foundation at St. Petersburg, Inc., unanimously agreed to perpetuate his memory by changing the name of the organization which originated out of his interest in Stetson to The Charles A. Dana Law Center Foundation, Inc. This name change became official by charter amendment, March 13, 1978. Himself a lawyer, Mr. Dana followed closely the 1954 venture that separated the law school geographically from the parent university in DeLand. Upon his first visit to the new campus he saw a need for a foundation to support the school, and through his initiative there was born the original law center foundation to "encourage and support Stetson University College of Law . . ." Mr. Dana's initial contribution to the Foundation was a most substantial one —funds to buy up the mortgage on the law school plant, held by the Union Trust Company of St. Petersburg. Mrs. Dana Approves Eleanor Naylor Dana, a substantial contributor to the College of Law personally (see page 8), was moved by the (continued on page 8) MARCH 17, 1973. Mr. Dana, Sr., was unable to attend dedication ceremonies of the library addition that his Foundation's $200,000 challenge gift made possible, but Mrs. Dana and the 1973 Directors of the Foundation were present in force. Dana, Jr. Provides $500,000 in Matching Funds for Library Books, Student Scholarships and Professorial Chair At their first meeting of the 1978-79 academic year, the Directors of The Charles A. Dana Law Center Foundation, Inc., formerly the Law Center Foundation at St. Petersburg, Inc., announced through their President, Mr. Cecil Bailey, '27, the receipt of a gift of $500,000 from The Charles A. Dana Foundation, Inc., Greenwich, Connecticut. This is the largest single grant Dean and President Comment Asked to comment upon the gift, Dean Richard T. Dillon stated, "This generous gift from The Charles A. Dana Foundation, Inc., coming dramatically in the closing year of the first quarter of a century of the College's operation on the St. Petersburg campus, gives impetus to our aspirations that the growth and development of Florida's first law school will continue at an even more exciting pace than that which has characterized its last 25 years of progress. We are all truly grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Dana and The Charles A. Dana Foundation, Inc., for their most meaningful support of this College." Pope Duncan, President of the University, responded to the announcement enthusiastically. He said, "The generosity of The Charles A. Dana Foundation . . . both in this grant and on previous occasions, is of great importance to Stetson University. That its College of Law has become an important insti- ever received by The Law Center Foundation, a corporation established in 1957 for the exclusive purpose of providing assets "for the benefit of, to perform the functions of, or to carry out the purposes of" Stetson University College of Law. Mr. Bailey stated that the income from the grant is to be used to purchase books for The Charles A. Dana Law Library, to perpetuate the Charles A. Dana Scholarships at the College of Law, and to supplement the salary of a distinguished professor who will be designated The Charles A. Dana Professor of Law. Typifies Founder's Philosophy In keeping with the philosophy of the late Mr. Charles A. Dana that institutions most worthy of help are those which are most willing to help themselves, the College of Law has restricted equal funds to match the Dana Foundation's gift. BENEFACTOR. Unveiled during 1958 exercises dedicating the Charles A. Dana Law Library, this impressive portrait of the donor is so displayed as to greet all visitors entering therein.
