CONTRACT AWARDED FOR TWO MAJOR BUILDINGS
New Administration Hall and Classroom Building
Y/ill Be Ready for Summer Session in June, 7968
What a difference a year will make! After frustrating but unavoidable delays,
the contract for the construction of the long-dreamed-of new Administration Hall
SUSPENSE. Behind the podium as architect Archie G. Parish opens and reads bids in the Great
Hall, May 2, vitally interested from the College of Law's point of view, are: LEFT TO RIGHT:

and a new classroom building has been
officially awarded to the Daniel Construction Company, nationally known
contractors. Before another Commencement it seems certain that the architect's plans will have been translated
into reality.
The Administration Hall will be just
across the mall from the Dana Library
and run parallel to it. The classroom
structure, north of the Administration
Hall, will run parallel to both buildings,
occupying the space that was formerly
classrooms C, D and E and the offices
of the assistant dean.
Both buildings will be two stories in
height, exteriorally patterned after the
library and harmonizing with the original
design of the campus complex. Like the
library, they will be connected to the
main plant by a foyer and will have an
elevator at the west end and a stairway
at the east end. A connecting cloister
between the buildings will line up with
the east library entrance so that, approaching the buildings from 6 I st Street,
one will see the big banyan tree that
shades the entrance to the swimming
pool south of the library. The area between the two new buildings, commonly
known as the Firestone Quadrangle, will
be a paved area appropriately landscaped with flowering trees and shrubs.
On the first floor of the Administration Hall will be the offices of the Dean
and his staff, the Assistant Dean, and
Registrar. On this floor, also, will be a
foyer leading into the present practice
court room, a general conference room,
'phone booths, toilets and storage facilities. The second floor will be devoted
mainly to faculty offices, a faculty research library, and a lounge in which
will be hung a portrait of the donor.
Seven Classrooms
The classroom building will consist of
seven large classrooms, three on the first
floor and four on the second. Additionally, on the first floor will be five offices
for extracurricular activities. The partitions between the ground floor classrooms will be movable so that the entire
area can be quickly converted into a
general purpose hall capable of accommodating five hundred people for convocations and institutes.
The Administration building will be
known as the Eleanor Dana Hall in honor
of the donor. The name of the "anonymous" donor who made the classrooms
possible will be revealed at an appropriate time during the Commencement activities. The gifts of these benefactors
have been supplemented by both a
federal loan and a federal grant.
The architects are Parish, Merwin &
Parish of St. Petersburg, designers of
the present Charles A. Dana Library.
AND MORE SUSPENSE. In front of the podium, prime and sub-contractors or their representatives
anxiously record and compare the bids of competing firms, hanging on each figure and dollar
sign. Nine prime contractors submitted bids for the more than three quarter million dollar construction job.
