College Of Law Launches New Development Program
Gifts Provide For Erection Of Two New Buildings
To Meet Growing Demand For Legal Education
Two major gifts toward capital improvements within a month will give Stetson
College of Law some of the extra room and flexibility it needs to meet the ever-
increasing demands of qualified applicants for a legal education.
At a dinner in honor of graduating seniors, January 29, Mrs. Charles A. Dana,
wife of the noted New York philanthropist who gave the college its half-million
dollar library in 1957, authorized the announcement that she was giving a new
administration building, to be known as Eleanor Dana Hall.
At the annual Homecoming Dinner of the Stetson Lawyers Association, February
19, Hewen Lasseter of Orlando and former Governor Doyle E. Carlton of Tampa,
both members of the Board of Overseers of the College of Law, jointly announced
+he gift of $125,000 from an anonymous donor, to be used toward the construction
of a new classroom building.
Both buildings will be architecturally designed to fit into the framework of the
existing campus complex. The expansion program does not mean that Stetson 5s
abandoning its Inns of Court concept
of a tightly-knit student body, working
in close relationship with the faculty and
visiting practitioners of law.
Comments on Gifts
Mrs. Dana: I am glad to contribute
personally to its (Stetson) becoming one
of the most desired law schools in the
nation.
President Edmunds: Our emphasis will
continue to be quality, not quantity. We
do not intend to abandon this successful formula.
Dean Sebring: We see our campus as
a Law Center, serving not only our students, but lawyers from across the state
as well.
Hewen Lasseter: These gifts put us a
long stride into the future, for which
we are making exciting plans.
Governor Carlton: Our plans call for
a gradual expansion of student enrollment, based on normal population
growth.
STETSON PROVIDES CONTINUING OPPORTUNITIES
FOR INCREASING PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE
The Committee on Continuing Legal Education of the American Bar Association
has urged that law schools, as one of their primary responsibilities, undertake to
provide practicing lawyers access to top quality programs designed to maintain
and increase their professionl competence.
Since its relocation in St. Petersburg in 1954, Stetson College of Law, both
independently and in close co-operation with the Bench and Bar of Florida, has
made its resources and facilities avail
able to serve the interests of the
profession and the public.

The forthcoming mid-winter Seminar
in Miami Beach, described on Pages 2
and 3, is undoubtedly the College's most
ambitious extension of the educational
process beyond the boundaries of its
own campus, though by no means its
first. Over the last decade, for example,
it has conducted a series of twenty-six
labor relations forums throughout the
State of Florida. These forums deal with
the special problems of business men
in the personnel and management fields
and keep them abreast of legal developments and administrative rulings pertaining to their particular interests.
The Seminar at Miami Beach, with its
imposing array of speakers of national
prominence, could not possibly have
been undertaken without the wholehearted support of the International
Academy of Trial Lawyers and the
American Trial Lawyers Association. The
presidents of these respective Associations, Perry Nichols, 37 and William
Colson of Miami, and their associates,
deserve the utmost credit for their organizational efforts.
Property Institute
The facilities of the College will be
made available to the Committee on
Continuing Legal Education of The Florida Bar for a Real Property Practice Institute, Friday, April 23. At this time
it is expected that the Real Property
Practice Manual, prepared by the Bar,
will be ready for distribution to those
in attendance.
