ROLLINS PRESIDENT TO ADDRESS GRADUATES
Brand And Atkins Will Be Honored At
Commencement Exercises, June 7
Hugh F. McKean, President of Rollins College, will deliver the annual commencement address at the College of Law, June 7. The public ceremonies will
be held in the Great Hall, beginning at 10:30 A.M. with a Convocation March.
In the procession will be 33 members of the graduating class, the faculty,
overseers, and honored guests of the College and the University. Diplomas will
be presented by Dr. J. Ollie Edmunds, President of the University.
Rollins in 1930 and become president
of this 75-year-old liberal arts college
in 1951. A firm believer in liberal
arts training for young people before
they begin specialization, he has
been instrumental in bringing some
of the country's outstanding educators
to Rollins.
President McKean has studied at
the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine
Arts, the Art Students League in New
York and the School of Fine Arts al^
Fontainebleau, France. He received
his Master of Arts degree from
Williams College and did graduate
work at Harvard University on a
Carnegie Scholarship.
Despite his many administrative
duties, President McKean still devotes
some of his time to teaching art.
Furthermore, many buildings on the
Rollins campus have been enhanced
by his handiwork. Last summer he
and Mrs. McKean redecorated one of
the oldest buildings on the campus
and transformed it into one of the
most unusual women's dormitories in
the country.
Awards and Honors
One of the connoisseurs of Louis
Comfort Tiffany - - - the founder of
art nouveau in tha United States and
the inventor of stained glass processes
- - - President McKean is the holder
of numerous awards and honors.
Among these are three top awards
from the Florida Federation of Art
Annual Exhibition, the Cervantes

Justice James Tenney Brand, former
Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme
Court and a Presiding Judge at the
Nurnberg War Crimes Trials, who is
retiring as Professor of Law at Stetson,
and C. Clyde Atkins of Miami, Past
President of the Florida Bar, will
receive Stetson's Distinguished Service
Award from President Edmunds.
Educator and Artist
The distinguished commencement
speaker, who has gained nationwide
recognition as a contemporary artist,
is a graduate of the institution he now
administers. He received a B.A. from
Medal of the Spanish Institute and the
Rollins Decoration of Honor.
A member of many cultural and
civic organizations, President McKean
is also the President of the Associated
Florida Private Colleges Fund, member
of the Central Florida Development
Committee, trustee of the Ringling
Museums of the State of Florida, and
trustee of the Louis Comfort Tiffany
Foundation.
His paintings are in the Toledo
Museum of Art and the University of
Virginia. President McKean also exhibited in New York and various parts
of the Southwest.
Commencement Breakfast
The traditional breakfast for the
graduates, their guests, and special
guests of Stetson will precede the
Commencement exercises. On this
occasion members of the graduating
class who have distinguished themselves by scholarship, by participation
in student activities and the winning
of competitive prizes and awards will
be introduced by Dean Harold L.
Sebring of the College of Law.
