Description
December 20, 1824 (8 pages). Letter from Mrs. Stephen Decatur (Susan Decatur) to Reynolds as part of her efforts to obtain prize money she felt had been due to her late husband, Commodore Decatur who had died in 1820, and his men who captured the Philadelphia in 1804 in Tripoli harbor. In the 18th Congress (Mar. 4, 1823-Mar. 3, 1825) Reynolds served on the Committee on Pensions and Revolutionary Claims. The British Lord Exmouth to whom Mrs. Decatur refers was Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, Baron Exmouth. Despite numerous bills in Congress, 'At the time of her death on July 21, 1860, her claim for the prize money from the 'Philadelphia' was still unresolved by Congress.'
