Description
August 12, 1842 (2 pages). Letter from Robert L. Caruthers, presumably to Reynolds. Caruthers was a Whig Congressman from Tennessee in the 27th Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843). The first paragraph refers to Secretary of State Daniel Webster's work with English special minister Alexander Baring, Baron Asburton. That work resulted in the 1842 Webster-Asburton Treaty regarding the northeast border of the United States. Bitter references are made to 'Capt. Tyler' (President John Tyler), Henry Clay, and former President Martin Van Buren.
