Description
Round medallion with 'Por Mares Nunca D'Antes Navegados' (For Seas Never Before Navigated) inscribed on the front and 'Sociedade de Geographia de Lisboa' (Geographic Society of Lisbon) on the back. On a heavy gold chain with globe and anchor alternating discs. In the original red box inscribed 'SGL' and with a crown on the top. Inside the box is the name of the maker, 'Condecoracoco, Frederico G. Da Costa.' The SGL was created in Lisbon in 1875 to promote and assit the study and process of geography and related sciences in Portugal. Given to John B. Stetson, Jr.
