As part of the Center for Excellence in Advocacy, the Social Justice Advocacy Certificate of Concentration program was founded by Professor Judith A. Scully and former Stetson Law professors Ann Piccard and Robert Bickel. The program was created to change the climate, conversation, and policy in relation to social justice issues. J.D. students are taught to deal directly with significant social justice issues in civil or criminal law.
As part of the SJA Concentration Program requirements, students complete specific coursework and pro bono service activities. They are assigned faculty mentors who have experience and expertise in social justice advocacy. Approved experiential learning opportunities, such as internships or clinics, are also required. A final capstone project consisting of an Independent Study or Directed Research Project focusing on contemporary social justice initiatives and issues must be approved by a mentor and completed for the certification.
Included in this collection are Directed Research Projects and Independent Research Projects selected by co-directors Professor Scully and Professor Kristen David Adams as part of the Certificate of Concentration requirement. The collection showcases student projects addressing real world social justice issues in the Tampa Bay area and beyond.
