My Dear Dr. Forbes:-
Directly and indirectly Mr. Flagler has been contributing
for many years to all sorts and kinds of worthy objects and undertakings. I feel, therefore, whenever I undertake to extend privileges which it is questionable whether they are mine or not, that I
am infringing upon his rigfets. I have always taken pleasure in
issuing transportation to you, giving rates to your school and assisting your undertaking in every way I could, but when I have in
mind the great demand that is made upon us in the direction of free
transportation and the close way in which we who are connected with
this institution Must all live in order to Rake both ends meet I feel
that I have no right to extend the courtesies which you ask for,
much as I would wish to do so. The reauest which you formerly made
came during my absence, and upon my return it was too late to have
been of terries to you. My reply at that time would have been similar to this one. i
I beg that you will appreciate my position in the_ matter.
