On September 4th, 1901, I shall open a School at St. Louis,
for "Children of Retarded Mentality."
An important adjunct to the School will be a well equipped
Gymnasium, where Swedish gymnastics will be practiced daily; as well
as educational gymnastics and training in walking and breathing. All
the children will learn to dance and march; vocal and instrumental
music will be given to such children as have musical ability.
There will be a special course in Articulation, for those in
need of such instruction. Reading will be taught by the word sentence
and phonetic methods. Drawing, leading up by degrees to writing;
clay modeling; basket weaving; and kindergarten work will be a part
of the daily programme.
Special attention will be given to Number Work. Elementary
Geography, General Information Lessons; and Study of Birds, Animals,
etc. from Charts and Maps will be taught to those capable of understanding them. Girls will be taught to sew, knit, crochet, darn and
embroider; while the boys will learn to use knife, hammer, saw, plane,
etc. (Sloyd work). All the work will be carefully graduated and
adapted to the particular needs of each pupil.
It has been my privilege to study the various methods of teaching
backward children in some of the best eastern schools, namely: Waverly,
Mass.; Barre, Mass.; Elwyn, Penn. and Haddonfield, N. J.
I am a graduate of the New York City Normal College and of the
New York Conservatory of Music. At present I am a teacher in the
''Seguin Physiological School for Children of Arrested Development''
and I have had seven years' experience in this line of work.
