My Dear Pres't Forbes:-
I will send you presently a formal letter containing the exact
form of vote passed this morning about two points,viz:-first,a resolution looking to more precise understanding of the conditions which
students must fulfil in order to get the benefit of our agreement as
to degrees!second,a resolution defining the conditions under which we
credit our own students with work done elsewhere for one or more
quarters. In brief,we want to make sure that students whom we would
not allow to take extra work shall not register for more than three course:
elsewhere. If our Deans have not in the past had a working arrangement with you,for instance, about the courses which our students should
take in the Winter quarter,we want to have a plan adopted which we can
work in harmony at both ends. Our suggestion is that in order to get
credit with us the student'sregistration must have been approved by both
institutions. That is,we want you to have the same information that we
have about the standing of students,so that those whom we would not allow
to take extra work may not steal a march on us by taking advantage of
our not exchanging information about them. That is,we want our Deans
to hold the same check over the extra work of our students that they
do in our own registration.
While I am about it,I would like to suggest another thing that
has been made a matter of a good deal of criticism, somewhat a la Tufts.
It is Prof.Carson's title:-Professor ofChemistry and Political Science.
The anomaly of the combination strikes outsiders very unfavorably. *
Assuming that it is not immediately practicable to divide the departments,
would it not be an improvement for Prof. Carson to have one or the other
chair, and for the catalogue to state that the work of the other department is provisionally performed by the Prof, of ?
I wish I could make one of the colony to be with you this Winter.
Sincerely
