Dear Sir:
In response to the desires of the trade, and in accordance
with the announcement and plans given in the Publishers' Weekly of
October 19, it is proposed to include in the Publishers' Trade List
Annual for 1902 an index to publishers* catalogues contained therein.
Work is now going forward on this index, based on the catalogues in
the Trade List Annual of 1901, with the purpose of having this material in such shape next spring that the new books of 1902 may then
be added and the whole index printed in time to be included in the
Trade List Annual at the regular date of publication—promptness
being vitally necessary to keep the Annual up to its full value
as a trade tool. This index will be an expensive undertaking, but
it is not proposed, in any event, to increase the price of the
Annual, whether in one volume or, as may be necessary, in two
volumes, beyond |5.00. It is necessary in connection with our
present plans, and also to give early word to publishers as to the
number of copies of catalogues required and as to the demand for
the work, to invite subscriptions at this early date, instead of,
as usual, in the spring, and we therefore request you to send us
on the inclosed postal your order' for the number of copies you will
require. The index will be a part of the Trade List Annual, and
will not be sold separately from it. In connection with the
catalogues bound with it, it will prove in book stores and libraries,
and also for private book buyers (among whom subscribers should
be sought by booksellers), a help in selling books, or finding
books, of maximum value at a minimum price.
