PROVOST'S REPORT
Several faculty have suggested that it would help communications if I periodically reported on current projects and
academic initiatives. I am glad to begin with the four items below. For now The Newsletter will be my vehicle.
Once the campus is electronically connected I will use E-mail. Your comments and questions are always welcome.
Elie Wiesel is Stewart Lecturer. Nobel Peace Laureate Elie Wiesel will give this year's Stewart Lecture Tuesday,
March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Edmunds Center. Professor Wiesel's presence is due to the work of Dixon
Sutherland and Clyde Fant, and I am chairing a committee to see that all runs smoothly. We intend this event to
help demonstrate our ongoing commitment to religious and ethical issues within a broad, inclusive framework. Our
Religion and Ethics Program represents this commitment, and one of our academic distinctives is our emphasis on
preparing students to live meaningful and socially responsible lives. Please take advantage of this opportunity to
alert students to the significance of this event and encourage them to attend. We have extended the deadline for
students to pick up tickets through the end of next week.
Howard Thurman Center. The Reverend Jefferson Rogers, a leading figure on the civil rights movement over
several decades, has assumed his position as Director of the new Howard Thurman Center. The Center is designed
to honor the memory of Howard Thurman, who grew up in Daytona Beach and became one of the country's most
prominent Black Ministers. The Center will be located both on the Stetson Campus (in the Russian Studies House
where the Chancellor's Office was previously housed) and at the Howard Thurman house in Daytona Beach. The
Center will sponsor research projects, seminars and public addresses and outreach into the community. We expect
the Center to contribute to our Africana Studies Program and to offer special opportunities to students. An
inaugural ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, April 4, at 7:00 p.m., in Elizabeth Hall, which will feature an original
musical composition written for the occasion and a presentation to Mrs. Howard Thurman.
Shirley Chisholm to be Commencement Speaker. Shirley Chisholm, first Black Congresswoman and active civil
rights leader, will deliver our Commencement address this May. I extend my deep appreciation to Visiting Scholar,
Dr. Joe Moore, for helping to arrange this happy occasion for us.
Friday 12:00 Noon Hour. After consulting with the Faculty Senate and the Academic Deans, I have decided that
beginning next Fall we will free the Friday noon hour for meetings or other campus events. Classes that would
normally have been scheduled for MWF at 12:00 will meet MW 12:00-1:15 p.m., thereby freeing up F 12:00 -
1:15 for other purposes. I propose the following schedule:

Third Friday of Month
Fourth/Fifth Fridays
University Faculty Meetings
School/College Meetings
Department Meetings
Student Meetings, open Forums, etc.
