PROVOST'S REPORT
NCAA Division I Certification. Since 1993 all Division I athletic programs have been required to go through a
certification process. This is quite similar to a SACS, NCATE, or AACSB accreditation. We will organize our effort
this spring, do a self-study during 1996-97, and have a peer review team visit us sometime in 1997-98. The self-
study is required to look at the following four major themes: academics, governance, fiscal management, and
equity issues. Sub-committees will be established for each area, and some of you may be asked to serve on them.
Dr. Lee has asked me to chair the Steering Committee. Other members of the Steering Committee are: Bob
Jacoby, Jeff Altier, Liz Schumaker, Dee Romine, Gene Huskey, Betty Thorne, Mack Wadsworth, Toni Avant, Jan
Latour (alumni representative), and Art Sullivan (trustee representative). A student member will be added. Your
suggestions and questions are welcome.
Students with Learning Disabilities. We continue to work on developing and disseminating appropriate policies for
students with learning disabilities. This is a complex issue, with students and their parents placing increasing
demands on our limited resources. We are trying to understand our legal obligations under the Americans with
Disabilities Act, which requires "reasonable accommodation," for those "otherwise qualified." But we also wish
to be responsive to student needs in a way which is consistent and fair. To continue progress on this issue, I chair
a group which meets periodically to review both general policies and specific student needs. That group includes
the following: the three academic deans, Judie Wright, Jim Beasley and Dave Bergen, Bette Heins, Kathy Piechura,
a practicing clinical psychologist, and a legal advisor. One of our most immediate goals is to prepare a pamphlet
which will describe our policies, suggested options for faculty, and available services for students. Once available,
this pamphlet will be distributed to staff and faculty as well as to current and prospective students as appropriate.

WOMEN'S STUDIES CONSORTIUM. This afternoon (3/1) from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge, Stetson
will host a meeting of the Central Florida Consortium for Women's Studies and Women's Issues. The consortium
is composed of faculty and administrators from colleges and universities in the area. At each meeting we focus
on what the host institution has done or is doing on behalf of women on campus. Please join us if you are
interested in discussing what Stetson has done to develop/implement its sexual harassment policy, to advocate
women's issues on campus, and to develop the WGS Program. Refreshments will be provided.

REMINDER-TAYLOR PRIZE IN HUMANITIES--1996. Please announce to your students that the Taylor Prize is
worth $300 this year and that the topic is "Cultural Diversity." Some recent or current term papers could be
