ANNOUNCEMENTS
Live in the Stetson Room, Tuesday, April 15, 7:30 p.m.—The Stetson University Jazz Ensembles—Vocal and
Instrumental —will perform under the direction of George West. One of the featured tunes will be "King Porter
Stomp," the original Fletcher Henderson arrangement of which was played by Benny Goodman. Taking the part
of Mr. Goodman will be clarinetist Michelle Cabrera. Several selections will be performed by the newly-formed
Stetson Vocal Jazz Ensemble, reflecting the 40's and 50's style of singing. From: Jan Kindred
Bob Schirmer Reading on April 15. On April 15, Bob Schirmer will be reading his Pushcart-Prize winning fiction
at Stetson. The reading will be at 8:00 p.m. in the John E. Johns Room, EH.315, and is open to all; a reception
will follow. Schirmer is this semester's Tim Sullivan Endowment for Writing special guest.
Schirmer has won writing awards in fiction and screenwriting. In 1991 he received the Bobst Prize from New York
University; accompanying this prize, given for promising new writers, was the publication of his first short story
collection from NYU Press. In 1992 he was named a Chesterfield Fellow in screenwriting. This year-long
fellowship led to his screenplay Stormchasers being optioned at Universal. His most recent award came in 1996,
when he received a Pushcart Prize (a honor distinguished by such previous winners as Joyce Carol Oates and
Louise Erdrich) for his short story "Jerry's Kid." His fiction has also recently appeared in such literary journals as
New England Review, Witness, and Indiana Review, and New Letters. From: Lori Snook
Campus-wide Interfaith Worship Service. All faculty, students and staff are invited to attend a campus-wide,
interfaith worship service at 7:15 p.m., Thursday, April 17, in Elizabeth Hall Chapel. The Reverend Tony Clark will
lead the "Service of Remembering and Giving Thanks," with music by the Stetson University Concert Choir, under
the direction of Robert Fort, and Susan Klotzbach, university organist. Worship leaders are members of the Trustee
Religious Life Council, including Dr. Thomas Cleary, missionary in residence; the Reverend Scott Conner,
Cooperative Baptist Fellowship; Adina Frydman, Jewish Federation of Florida; Father William Gohring, Catholic
Diocese of Orlando; the Reverend W. Don Lyon, Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida; Dr. Terry Rhodes, chair of
the Religious Life Council and trustee; Mary Rinderle, chair of Student Religious Council; and the Reverend
Jefferson Rogers, director of Stetson University Howard Thurman Program.
The worship service is being planned by the Trustee Religious Life Council and the Student Religious Life Council.
