ANNOUNCEMENTS
REMINDER: All faculty, staff, and students are invited to the WGS Roundtable Series session from noon to 1:00
p.m. today, Friday, March 27, in 308 Elizabeth Hall. This week's session will feature presentations by American
Studies major Suzanne Hartley and Sociology major Brande Martin, 1997 Stetson Undergraduate Research
Experience (SURE) grant recipients, on the projects they did last summer. Ms. Hartley will discuss race relations
in St. Augustine since the 1960s; Ms. Martin will discuss aspects of inequality at a local regional supermarket
before and after two class-action lawsuits for gender and race discrimination. Drinks and dessert will be provided.
Each presentation meets the College of Arts and Sciences Cultural Event requirement.
REMINDER: On Monday, March 30, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Private Dining Room, there will be a bookfeast
on Farai Chideya's book Don't Believe the Hype: Fighting Cultural Misinformation About African Americans. To
reserve your copy of the book and make a reservation for the bookfeast-which includes a free dinnerl-please
contact Ms. Norma Dean at ext. 7720. This event is a forerunner to Ms. Chideya's April 6 visit to campus (see
the March 20 edition of The Newsletter for details). It is open to all faculty, staff, and students, and, for students

Live in Elizabeth Hall, Friday, March 27, 7:30 p.m. —The Stetson Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Alvaro Gomez.

Live in Elizabeth Hall, Sunday, March 29, 3:00 p.m.— The faculty recital of Jean West, flute, and Michael Rickman,
piano, will feature a number of works in which the music is coupled with readings by Gordon Ohlsson, member
of Stetson's vocal faculty and Jean's father. The three colleagues will perform Robert Frank's "The Emergence of
Night," Daniel Pinkham's "Miracles," inspired by the miracles of Christ, Theobald Boehm's settings of three
Schubert art songs, and "Remembering Rivers" by Nebraska composer Randall Snyder. "The Emergence of Night,"
for flute, organ, and narrator, is based on the composer's own allegorical poem about death. "Remembering Rivers"
is a setting for narrator and flute of Esther McCloud's poignant tribute to her friend and mentor, Douglas Dyer, who
died of AIDS at 45. Jean and Michael will also perform Philippe Gaubert's Third Sonata for Flute and Piano.
Live in Elizabeth Hall, Tuesday, March 31, 7:30 p.m.—This concert will feature various Brass Ensembles, coached
and/or directed by members of the brass faculty, David Schmidt, Moffatt Williams, William Rogan, and Ed

FACULTY APPRECIATION BBQ. The Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council cordially invite all faculty to this year's
Faculty Appreciation BBQ, on Saturday, April 4, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Fraternity Row. In addition, there will
be an Easter Egg Hunt for the children. There will be two designated areas and children will be divided into age
groups. Prizes will be awarded. Please RSVP by Tuesday, March 31 to campus box 6051 with number attending
the BBQ and number of children participating in the Easter Egg Hunt.
