ANNOUNCEMENTS
MARTIN LUTHER KING BREAKFAST. On Monday, January 16, Stetson University and the DeLand community will
be celebrating the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at a commemorative breakfast in his honor.
The breakfast will begin at 7:45 a.m. in the Edmunds Center, immediately followed by the annual DeLand Martin
Luther King march. The office of Multicultural Affairs (CUB 209) and Dr. Patrick Coggins (Davis Hall) are selling
$5 tickets for this event. All faculty and staff are invited to participate.

REMINDER. On Monday, January 16, the Russian Studies Center is hosting a symposium, "Prospects for
Democratic Change in Russia," in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building. Topics and times of the two
sessions are as follows:
* FIRST SESSION--4:00 p.m., Stetson Room, Carlton Union Building with Alexander Obolonsky.
"The Political Development of Russia and the West." Dr. Obolonsky is a senior fellow at Moscow's
Institute of State and Law, a division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
SECOND SESSION--7:30 p.m., Stetson Room, Carlton Union Building with Peter Reddaway.
"Is Russian Democracy Doomed?" Peter Reddaway is Professor of Political Science at George
Washington University and known to many through articles on Russian politics in The New York Review
of Books.

ATTENTION FACULTY-DEADLINE EXTENDED. Please announce to your undergraduate students that the deadline
for the Stetson Institute for Social Research (SISR) undergraduate social science research awards has been
extended to Friday. January 20. These grants of $500 are to fund students' independent or collaborative social
science research which uses either quantitative or qualitative methods of research. The student need not be
majoring in a social science discipline, but the research must be social science in nature and the student must be
a current undergraduate Stetson student at the time of the award. For a copy of the grant application, please
contact Mrs. Kathy Kelton, the SISR secretary, at ext. 7240, or drop by 219 Davis Hall.

REMINDER-MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION INSTITUTE. By now, I hope that all faculty are aware of the '95
Multicultural Education Institute to be held on our campus on Friday, January 20. Please make certain that your
students are aware of the conference. Faculty, staff, and students may attend any workshops at no charge but
they must pre-register by January 16. If you are unable to attend the conference but would like to hear the talk
by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, tickets will be available in Continuing Education, Flagler Hall, suite 102. Also,
moderators are still needed! For more information or a brochure, call Continuing Education at ext. 7500.
