REMINDER: All faculty, staff, and students are invited to the WGS Roundtable Series session on "How Do You
Know If You're Straight? Issues of Sexual Orientation" on Friday, March 20, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Room 308
Elizabeth Hall. Alan Siler, President of STH, and Mary Harrill, Vice President of STH, will moderate an open
discussion about sexual orientation. Refreshments will be provided. This event meets the College of Arts and
Sciences cultural event requirement.
Members of the Stetson community are invited to the Women and Gender Studies Program celebration of Women's
History Month dessert party and film on Monday, March 23, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. This

RUSSIAN STUDIES VISITORS. On Monday, March 23, at 12:45 p.m. in the Private Dining Room, Dr. Yuri
Scherbak, Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, will speak on Ukraine's place in international politics and
the world economy.
On Thursday, March 26, at 4:00 p.m., in the atrium of the Lynn Business Center, Dr. Jerry Lineneger, NASA
Astronaut, will discuss his experiences on board the Russian space station MIR. The title of his talk is "MIRacle
Mission: 132 Days in Space." Dr. Linenger, who battled the fire on board MIR, is the subject of an article in the
current Reader's Digest. For reasons that he does not fully understand, he was also recently named People

The Physics Department welcomes back Bill Newsome, class of '74. Bill, one of Stetson's most distinguished
alumni, is currently on the faculty of Stanford Medical School, and he will be on campus to be inducted into Phi
Beta Kappa honor society on Tuesday, March 24. After the ceremony, there will be a dinner followed by a talk
from Bill entitled "From Stetson to Stanford: A Retrospective."
All faculty are invited to attend the dinner and subsequent talk. They will be held in the Private Dining Room in
the Carlton Union Building, on March 24 beginning at 6:00 p.m. Space is limited, so reservations must be made
by March 20 to the Physics Department. To make your reservation, contact Laura Glander, Physics Department
secretary at ext. 8910 or e-mail [email protected]. The cost is $8.95 and should be paid by check at the
door. Bill is one of Stetson's most distinguished alum, and those of you who know him will agree that the evening

Deadline for the Ann Morris Essay and Creative Writing Contest, sponsored by Women and Gender Studies, is 4:30
p.m., March 27. If you have students that have written papers for a class this year or a senior research paper that
addresses gender issues, please encourage them to submit-first prize is $100, with additional money prizes as
appropriate. Papers should be submitted to the Foreign Languages Office in Sampson Hall, with writer's name on
