Live in Elizabeth Hall, Sunday, January 26, 3:00 p.m.-Darryl One will conduct The Music School Faculty Chamber
Ensemble in a performance of Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat ("The Soldier's Tale"), with narrators Julia
Davidson Truelo and Lester Malitezia. Faculty performers are Lynn Cholka, clarinet; Ashley Cooley, bassoon;
Moffatt Williams, trumpet; David Schmidt, trombone; Alvaro Gomez, violin; John Wieland, bass; and Carl Rendek,
percussion. Stravinsky wrote L'Histoire at the end of World War I when it was no longer possible to assemble large
bodies of performers for the grand ballets he is known for. He chose for his instrumental ensemble a high and a
low instrument in each family. L'Histoire is based on the Faust legend, except that the soldier in Stravinsky's tale
barters his violin for the enticements offered by the Devil.
Live in Elizabeth Hall, Thursday, January 30, 8:00 p.m.-Guest flutist Claudia Anderson and pianist Victoria
Berneking will perform a recital of twentieth-century works, highlighted by the world premiere of "running the
edgE," composed in 1996 by Jennifer Higdon for two flutes and percussive piano. Dr. Anderson will be joined by
flutist Jill Felber for his premiere. The trio has worked together for many years even though they are separated
by many miles: Claudia Anderson is Visiting Professor of Flute at Ithaca College, Jill Felber is Professor of Flute
at UC-Santa Barbara, and Vicky Berneking is Professor of Piano at James Madison University. Dr. Anderson will
also present a workshop, "Taking the Stage," on Wednesday evening (call Jean West at 8970 for time and place).
The recital is sponsored by the Stetson Artists and Lecturers program. Please note the 8:00 p.m. time.
Live in Elizabeth Hall, January 31. 7:30 p.m.-The faculty recital of Mollie Rich, soprano; Robert Rich, tenor; and
Michael Rickman, piano; will feature vocal duets of Felix Mendelssohn, his sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, and
Johannes Brahms, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the death of Felix Mendelssohn and his sister, Fanny
and the 100th anniversary of the death of Johannes Brahms. Professors Robert and Mollie are returning from
sabbatical leaves in Germany where they studied with the internationally renowned voice teacher, Horst Gunter.
Also included on the recital will be works from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" by Gustav Mahler and songs by Richard
