MODEL SENATE. The 28th Stetson U.S. Model Senate is being held this week beginning Thursday at 2:30 p.m.,
continuing all day Friday and all day Saturday. This year, we have 90 student senators, from 8 schools and four
states, competing for Outstanding Senator awards. We also have the current U.S. Senate Parliamentarian here
assisting the student senators. All events are in the Carlton Union Building, and you are welcome to come by and
observe this educational experience. It is rewarding to see students give political speeches and negotiate bills
through committees.
On Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Garden Room in the Carlton Union Building, U.S. Senator Max Cleland, will
give a public speech. Senator Cleland is a Stetson graduate, a former Cabinet official, a Vietnam War hero, as well
as a Democratic U.S. Senator. He is also an entertaining and inspirational speaker. Please join us.
The Political Science Department asks for your patience in excusing Stetson model senators from classes on
Thursday from 2:30 and on Friday. We have 44 Stetson students participating. They are needed in committee
sessions and in floor debate to maintain party balance, and to further the Senate role-play. Thank you.

Live in Peabody Auditorium, Friday, March 13, 7:30 p.m.—The combined forces —over 300 strong—of the Stetson
Music School will gather in Peabody Hall tonight to present the third Stetson University Music School Gala. The
concert highlights the best we have to offer—our students. You will hear large ensembles—Symphonic Wind
Ensemble with a student conductor, Concert Choir, University Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra,
Choral Union, and Children's Choir with student soloist; small ensembles—Guitar Ensemble, Woodwind Quartet,
Percussion Ensemble, The Stetson Brass (faculty), and a Violin Duo (faculty); and solos—a student pianist, a flute
solo by a student composer, and a selection from "Phantom of the Opera" from our student-produced Broadway
Revue. The Music School will honor Tippen Davidson, owner and editor of The Davtona Beach News Journal and
long-time supporter of music in the area and of the Stetson School of Music. (Tippen used to play viola in the
orchestra.) A scholarship is being developed in Tippen's name. The evening will be topped off with Woodward's
wise and whimsical witticisms and a fabulous finale which will amaze, astonish, and astound the thrilled throngs
who have gathered for the event.
Live in the Edmunds Center, Monday, March 16, 7:30 p.m.—Residents of the DeLand community will be treated
to the best band music available when the U.S. Army Field Band of Washington, D.C. plays here on Monday night.
The band has performed in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Europe, India, the Far East, and
Central and South America. One reviewer in York, England, noted, ". . . 115 men in a park did more good for
their country in 90 minutes than the pronouncements of their statesmen could do, perhaps, in as many months."
Tickets for this performance may be obtained free of charge at the Stetson Music Office or by sending a stamped,
self-addressed envelope with your request to the Stetson Music Office addressed to "Army Band Tickets."
