UNIVERSITY FACULTY MEETING-Monday, March 28, 1994,10:00 a.m. Rinker Auditorium. At its March 7, 1994,
meeting the Faculty Senate unanimously endorsed the establishment of the Committee on Academic Affairs of the
Board of Trustees as described in the Bylaws of Stetson University, Inc. dated January 24, 1994. The language
of the Bylaws, which had been modified in response to an earlier Faculty Senate discussion, reads as follows:
"COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC AFFAIRS. The Committee on Academic Affairs shall consist of at least seven
Trustees, the Chairs of the College Boards, the Faculty Senate Chair, a Faculty Senate Chair, a faculty
representative of the College of Law, and others as elected by the Board. At the request of the President of the
University, the Chief Academic Officer of the DeLand campus, or the Vice-President and Dean of the College of
Law, this Committee shall advise the University on issues affecting its educational programs and shall report on
academic matters to the Board of Trustees. At regular meetings of the Board, this Committee shall report on its
activities."
In my opinion this committee would be beneficial to both the trustees and the faculty, and I recommend Faculty
endorsement. Since the main business of the University is its academic program, most colleges and universities
have such a committee as a normal part of its Board structure. It would be my intention to bring to them such
matters as: The appointment of new faculty (to make them aware of the quality of the faculty), curriculum
changes (to help them stay informed about the key curriculum issues for the University), and faculty welfare issues
such as salaries, fringe benefits, and professional development funds (to enlist their support in responding to those
needs). It has been my experience that the more trustees get to know faculty and what they are doing, the more
enthusiastic they are in support of the University in its academic programs.

in conjunction with the Women and Gender Studies Program to be held Thursday, March 31, in the Lynn Business
Center. All interested faculty, students, and alumni are invited to attend. The program begins at Noon with lunch
in the Board Room for faculty and panelists. Workshops and round table follow throughout the afternoon. Please
