ACADEMIC HONORS CONVOCATION is today Friday, April 23, at noon in Elizabeth Hall Auditorium. Those
presenting awards should assemble stage right. A reminder that it is the presenter's responsibility to ensure that

REMINDER-The Russian Studies Program will be hosting Susan Eisenhower and Roald Sagdeev on April 26 and
27. Ms. Eisenhower, the granddaughter of the 34th President, is the director of the Center of Political and
Strategic Studies in Washington, DC. She is the author of Mrs. Ike, a biography of her grandmother, Breaking Free,
an autobiography that chronicles her relationship and marriage to the Soviet space scientist, Roald Sagdeev, and
books on world politics. NATO at 50. her most recent work, is also the title of the public lecture she will give in
the Atrium of the Lynn Business Center at Stetson on Monday, April 26 at 4:00 p.m. She will have attended the
NATO summit in Washington the previous day. Ms. Eisenhower has been a leading critic of the expansion of
NATO.
Roald Sagdeev, currently Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland, was for many years the head of the
Soviet Space Research Institute in Moscow. Besides his work in the field of science and technology in the Soviet
Union, Professor Sagdeev participated actively in the movement to democratize Soviet politics and society in the
Gorbachev era. He served as a reformist member of the last Soviet parliament. Professor Sagdeev is the author
of The Making of a Soviet Scientist. His lecture to be presented at 7:00 p.m. in Room 100 of the Lynn Business
Center on Monday, will be on "The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Space Program."
On Tuesday morning, April 27, at 8:30 a.m. in the Lynn Business Center Board Room (4th floor), the Russian
Studies-Program will host a "conversation" with Susan Eisenhower and Roald Sagdeev.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE announces a workshop on the use of electronic portfolios and their
role in student placement and program assessment. Mercedes Tichenor and Kathy Piechura-Couture will lead the
workshop, to be held from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, in the Private Dining Room.
The Education Department now asks junior students to develop electronic portfolios that are used to assess the
student's progress in meeting curricular and program goals. During the senior year, many students have been
successful in using electronic portfolios in a CD format as part of a strategy for attaining an appropriate job. Drs.
Tichenor and Piechura-Couture will discuss examples of both kinds of portfolio and their relevance to assessment
and placement issues that should be of interest across the curriculum, especially as the self-study process begins.
