FACULTY SENATE MEETING. The January Faculty Senate meeting will be Monday, January 11, in the Faculty
Lounge of the Carlton Union Building. The meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m., preceded by dinner at 6:00 p.m.

1999 DUNCAN GALLERY SEASON OPENS WITH CERAMIST JACK EARL. Earl, a nationally and internationally
recognized figurative sculptor, has visited Stetson University a number of times as a ceramics workshop leader.
This will be his first solo exhibition on our campus and he will exhibit in both the Duncan Gallery as well as the
Foyer Gallery. Opening reception is Tuesday, January 12, 6-8 p.m. Mr. Earl will give a gallery talk during the
reception. Exhibition continues through February 12. Arts & Sciences cultural credit applies.
TWO ART LECTURES IN JANUARY. Nationally and internationally known visual artist John Torreano will lecture
in the Duncan Gallery of Art on Wednesday, January 20, 7: 30 p.m. Torreano's work confronts his viewers with
many oxymoronic binaries of contemporary art and culture. Speaking on the characteristics of visual arts,
Torreano says they "have the unique capacity to deliver individual points of view. . .{which is) especially important
at this time in history because there is such a pervasive sense of disconnectedness and loss of identity within
culture." Mr. Torreano's visit is sponsored by the Atlantic Center for the Arts (NSB) as part of its Master Artists-in-
Residence Outreach Program.
"Putting the Magic Back in Art: Jan van Eyck, Pregnancy and Childbirth" is the topic to be presented by art
historian Dr. Penny Howell Jolly. Jolly is Director of Art History and Professor of Art and Art History at Skidmore
College. Her lecture will describe the medieval belief in thaumaturgical properties of paintings, in which the artwork
was used as a means to becoming pregnant and ensuring safe deliveries. Rinker Auditorium, Davis Hall, Monday,
January 25, 1999, 7:30 p.m. Both lectures are free and open to the public and both offer Arts & Sciences cultural

TIME WARNER COMMUNICATIONS EXCELLENCE IN SPORTS PROGRAM will be conducting its Basketball Clinic
on Saturday, January 9, featuring instruction from Hatter coaches and athletes. The clinic will be held at the
Edmunds Center from 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. All school-age children ages five through seventeen are invited to
attend, and will receive a free t-shirt, and a chance to win prizes. All the families and friends of faculty and staff
are encouraged to attend. Please have your children wear the appropriate clothing and shoes if they would like
