ANNOUNCEMENTS
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR DR. EVANS JOHNSON will be held Saturday, January 10, at 10:30 a.m. in Elizabeth
Hall Chapel. Dr. Pope Duncan will lead the service. Dr. Johnson, Professor Emeritus of History and a member of
Stetson faculty since 1953, died at home on January 5, following a long illness with cancer. In lieu of flowers,
contributions may be made to the Student Retention Fund and sent to Development Services, Unit 8286, with
notation as memorial for Dr. Johnson. Immediately following the service in Elizabeth Hall, a reception will be held
in the Faculty Lounge, Carlton Union Building. From: Sims Kline
Live in Downtown DeLand, Monday, January 12, 12:20 p.m.—Ready for a break from the routine of classes and
committee work? The first concert of the Spring 12:20 Stetson-DeLand Concert Series will take place near the
fountain at the County Administration Building in Downtown DeLand. So sit down at one of the sidewalk cafes
on Indiana and enjoy 30 minutes of the Stetson Brass, our new faculty brass quintet. The Stetson Brass includes
faculty Moffatt Williams, trumpet; Bill Rogan, horn; David Schmidt, trombone; and Ed Firth, tuba; and alum Pete
Waidelich, trumpet. (Cold or rain location: The Downtown Mall at Cook's Cafe.)
Live in Elizabeth Hall, Tuesday, January 13, 7:30 p.m.—David Vining, professor of trombone at the University of
Kansas, will perform a recital and provide a clinic for our students and area trombonists. His pianist will be Stetson
faculty, Kristie Born. Vining performed and recorded with The Chestnut Brass Company from 1985-90. He has
won numerous solo competitions and plays with chamber ensembles and orchestras around the country. He is
currently on the touring roster of the Kansas Arts Commission and is a clinician for Selmer Musical Instruments.
Live in Elizabeth Hall, Friday. January 16, 7:30 p.m.—Craig Maddox and Kristie Born will present a baritone and
piano faculty recital next Friday night. Details in next week's Newsletter.

DuPont Ball Library, in the Hat Rack, in the Music School office, and around town.

1998 EXHIBITIONS OPEN. Be sure to stop by Sampson Hall/Duncan Gallery of Art on Friday, January 16, 6:00 -
8:00 p.m. for the artist's reception launching our two newest exhibitions: Sculpture by Richard Beckman, and
ceramics by Vincent Sansone, both Florida artists. Beckman's work will be in the Duncan Gallery and Sansone's
in the Foyer Gallery. Both exhibitions will continue through February 15, 1998. Refreshments will be served.
Reception is free and open to the public. Arts & Sciences cultural events credit applies for students.
