THE 1997 HOWARD THURMAN LECTURE SERIES. A reminder that the first speaker in The 1997 Howard
Thurman Lecture Series is scheduled Monday, January 13. Theologian and educator Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor,
author of The Substance of Things Hoped For: A Memoir of African-American Faith, and pastor emeritus of
Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, will meet with faculty and administrators at 4:00 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge
for an informal Dialogue. At 7:00 p.m., he will give a free, public lecture in Room 204 of the Carlton Union
Building. Dr. Proctor will sign his latest book after the lecture. Please plan to participate in the Dialogue and
lecture and encourage any of your students on campus to attend the lecture.

Live in Elizabeth Hall, January 14, 7:30 p.m.--Craig Maddox, baritone, and Kristie Born, piano, will perform works
by Handel, Beethoven, Ravel, Grieg, and Finzi. "To a Poet" is a song cycle by 20th-century English composer
Gerald Finzi set to the poems of six different poets.
Live in Elizabeth Hall, January 17, 7:30 p.m.-The recital of Jane Christeson, mezzo-soprano, and Michael Rickman,
piano, will feature works of Schubert and Brahms, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Brahms' death and
Schubert's birth. They will be joined by soprano Kandie Kearley, a graduate of Stetson and a doctoral candidate
at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Kandie studied voice at Stetson with Mollie Rich. Jane is
a frequent guest recitalist and opera singer, has appeared with several symphony orchestras, and most recently
sang at the Seaside Music Theater in their production of Rossini's The Barber of Seville. The recital will also
include works of Purcell, DuParc, and Offenbach. From: Jan Kindred
