FACULTY CROSS-LISTING COURSES FOR THE WOMEN AND GENDER STUDIES MINOR: Faculty teaching courses
in the Fall 1998 semester that might be suitable for cross-listing with the WGS minor should contact Diane Everett,
Interim Director of the WGS Program, by Tuesday, January 27. (Please note that this is one day earlier than the
original posting on Faculty-L.) In order for the course to count toward the minor, the instructor should demonstrate
that the proposed course is consistent with the objectives of the WGS minor. Please submit a course syllabus or
a detailed course outline of the proposed course, with a course description and its objectives, to Diane Everett, Unit

Live in Elizabeth Hall, Tuesday, January 27, 7:30 p.m.— David Bjella and Michael Rickman will play sonatas for
cello and piano by Beethoven and Shostakovich. Also on the program will be the premiere of Stetson
composer/cellist Kari Juusela's new work for cello quartet, inspired by a favorite ancient Indian quotation. Kari has
divided the work into four movements which capture his personal interpretation of each segment of the
quotation:
Bliss is . . .
the effortless suspension of time . . .
at the moment of . . .
transcendence
He has composed the quartet as a musical pastiche contrasting familiar "historical" sound images with exotic and
newer images. The four cellos are amplified, and the signal is gently digitally processed with delays and regenerated
chorus effects. For this performance, David will be joined by two of his students. Heather Jacobson and Amy
Dickinson, and by the composer.
We welcome back Michael Rickman from his semester of teaching and performing in Germany. He gave two
recitals in Freiburg and played a critically acclaimed performance in Denzlingen. David has played recent recitals
at Georgia State University and in Jacksonville, and this Spring will play in Wisconsin (Brahms' Double Concerto
for Violin & Cello) and in Augusta. Jan Kindred
The Physics Department will be sponsoring a public lecture on Thursday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Jenkins
Room (213 Sage). It will be given by Dr. M. B. Webb a member of the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-
Madison and his talk is entitled "The Revolution in Surface Science-Toward Seeing and Feeling the Atoms." Dr.
Webb is being brought to campus by the Physics Department and the Society of Physics Students through the
American Institute of Physics Visiting Scientist Program. The lecture is free, open to the public, and no
reservations are required. Any questions regarding the lecture can be directed to Dr. George Glander, ext. 8915.
