The University Faculty of Stetson University, DeLand campus, met Friday, March 17, 2000, in the
Rinker Auditorium, Davis Hall.
Dr. Jim Woodward, Chair, Council of Deans, opened the meeting at 12.15 p.m. and called on Jane
Bradford, Chair, 1999-2000 Bylaws Revision Committee, who he said will be leading the discussion
on the Draft University Faculty and Faculty Senate Bylaws.
Bradford first thanked all the members who have served on the committee and particularly Dr. Janis
Kindred who has been with the committee during the entire three-year process. She then opened
the floor for discussion on the University Faculty Bylaws.

A question was raised regarding School and College faculties approving changes in the curricula of
their respective school/college since the university now has a University Curriculum Committee. Dr.
Gene Huskey, Chair, University Curriculum Committee, said currently the role of the University
Curriculum Committee is not the "sovereign authority" but rather to act as a mediator if an issue
arose such as recent confusion between two schools using the same title for a different course.

A clarification whether this meant in addition to an adjunct professor. Bradford said this new
designation meant all faculty in a non-tenure track position to include lecturers, instructors, adjunct
faculty and other faculty titles.
(4.3 and 8.1)
A question of clarification was raised regarding the wording in 8.1 versus 4.3. Bradford said that
the intention was to omit the wording "Secretary of the Faculty" (8.1) since this position, as at
present, does not necessarily need to be a member of the faculty. The wording in this section is a
carry-over of the old bylaws.
Hearing no more comments, Bradford then called for discussion on the draft Faculty Senate Bylaws.

Celebration Academy? Is this correct? After some discussion it was confirmed that Celebration
faculty also teach on the Deland campus. Therefore, it was recommended that Celebration
Academy be deleted.

A question was raised regarding the immediate Past Senate Chair serving on the President's Staff.
This practice could reduce the effectiveness of the department to which this faculty member
belongs as well as not being attractive to a potential faculty-senate chair. When asked about the
extent of this assignment, Dr. Diane Everett, Chair, Faculty Senate, said the President's Staff meets
every other week between 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. with about 8 workshops a year. Also, appearances at
social events are encouraged (although not required) along with the many hours of invisible work
that is associated with the position. It was observed that continuity and not greater faculty input
was the reason for the past chair serving on the President's Staff. Another question raised was
whether being Chair of the Senate two years in a row, meant serving an additional two years on
the President's Staff?
