ARTS AND SCIENCES FACULTY: The College faculty meeting is Tuesday, April 26, at 4:00
p.a. in Room 100 Flagler Hall. We will discuss the Curriculum's Committee's actions
and hear a brief report from the Committee on Assessment. From: Dean Gary Maris
On April 22 at 7:00 p.a. in the Stetson Room, Professor Henry Abraham will be the
guest speaker for Phi Beta Kappa. Professor Abraham is one of the nation's foremost
scholars on the judicial system. His topic will be "Judging or Legislating?
Reflections on the Judicial Role in Democratic Self-Governing Society." Please
announce this to your students. This is a unique opportunity students should not

The Professional Development Coaaittee is sponsoring a workshop on April 28 from 4:00-
6:30 p.a. on "Improving the Quality of the Freshman Experience." In February, Lou
Brakeman, John Hague, Ellen Smith, and Judie Wright attended a conference on the
freshman year at the University of South Carolina. The workshop will examine both
long-range goals and changes which can be adapted to existing programs immediately.
Lou Brakeman will provide a general overview. John Hague will examine ways of
strengthening teaching. Judie Wright will focus on support systems and ways of
strengthening learning. Ellen Smith will talk about building a sense of community.
Each presentation will allow for general discussion by all participants. All members
of the faculty and administration are invited. To make reservations for the workshop
and the dinner following the presentations, call the Political Science Department
(ext. 349) or send a note to T. Wayne Bailey, campus box 8302.

It is with sincere regret that we inform you of the death of Karen Haas,
were held in Stetson Baptist Church on Monday, April 18, 1988.
Services
The Karen Haas Fund, to honor Stetson students who show unusual creativity, has been
established in accordance with the wishes of Karen and her family. Interested members
of the university community may make contributions, payable to Stetson, with the
notation "For the Karen Haas Fund." Further information may be obtained from Carter
