Collegial Seminar-PDR
The Artists and Lecturers 1993-94 Series will present Read Gainsford, pianist, in recital Tuesday, February 8, 8:00
p.m., in Elizabeth Hall. The program will feature works of Beethoven, Schumann, Faure, and Prokofiev. Mr.
Gainsford, a native of New Zealand, has won the top awards in piano in both New Zealand and Great Britain, as
well as prizes in prestigious international competitions (Jeunesses Musicales, William Kapell, Robert Casadesus).
In 1992 he won first prize in the Society of American Musicians competition and second place at the Missouri
Southern international Piano Competition. Mr. Gainsford has performed widely in New Zealand and Australia, in
Spain, Yugoslavia, Switzerland, Greece, and in many of the top venues in Great Britain, including Queen Elizabeth
Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and a highly acclaimed debut at Wigmore Hall. Mr. Gainsford is now based at Indiana
University. This event is free of charge to the public, and the campus community is cordially invited.

On Wednesday, February 9, 1994, Dr. James T. Sears from the University of South Carolina will be speaking on
the topic, "Homosexuality and Southern Mores." The lecture will take place in the Elizabeth Hall Auditorium at
10:00 a.m. Dr. Sears specializes in cultural studies with a focus on Sexuality. He has authored nearly 100 book
chapters, articles, essays, and scholarly papers and has written or edited five books. Most notable is the critically
acclaimed Growing up Gav in the South: Race. Gender, and Journeys of the Spirit. From: Tessa Immich
REMINDER-Actor to perform The Gospel of Luke. Broadway actor Bruce Kuhn will bring his talents to Stetson
University, February 4 and 5, at 7:00 p.m. (Friday and Saturday night). See the last edition of The Newsletter for
complete details. The performance is sponsored by the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

The first Collegial Seminar of the Spring Semester will be next Friday, February 11, at noon in the Private Dining
Room. Dr. Gareth Williams, Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, will make a multi-media presentation
titled "An Interactive Textbook." This will illustrate how computing power and word processing come together
in an interactive textbook to provide an integrated environment for learning. Students can change data in the text,
explore new ideas, express their thoughts, add sound, and customize the book to reflect their own ideas. The
computer can be used to perform numeric and algebraic computation, to illustrate concepts through animation and
graphics, etc. How can such a textbook be structured so that it is easy to use? What computer power is needed?
What teaching facilities are needed? There is much opportunity and many routes one can take. An interactive
textbook will be presented and some of these issues, which apply to many fields, addressed. Bring your lunch;
presentation begins at 12:15 p.m. Coffee and dessert furnished by Dean Gary Maris, College of Arts and Sciences.
