Next, the presidential search was discussed. It was pointed
out that the faculty had not yet been formally notified of the
process or solicited for nominations. There was concern that the
closing date for nominations, January 15 , together with the delay
in notification, would not allow sufficient faculty input, since
many of them would be off campus from now until early January.
Also, the closing date did not allow for alumni involvement at
homecoming.
Nylen moved as follows : "The Faculty Senate, being
concerned that the University have an open and effective search
for president, requests that the faculty be notified immediately
of the presidential search process and of the job description so
that nominations from the faculty may be solicited. We recommend
that the ad placed in the Chronicle be reproduced in the faculty
bulletin , This Week, or, if this is not possible, be sent to the
faculty members with the notification of the nomination process.
The Senate assumes that alumni, Baptist colleges and
colleges of special note have been notified. If not, we recommend
notifying these groups.
In order to provide sufficient time for nominations, given
the lack of notification of the process to the faculty, we
respectfully ask for consideration of moving the closing date for
nominations by several weeks. We feel that an extension of the
deadline would allow for the absence of the faculty over the
holidays and sufficient time to involve the alumni at
homecoming."
The motion was seconded by Morris and passed unanimously.
Under old business, Maris announced that the suspension
policy would be discussed with the faculty at a faculty meeting
on December 10.
There was no new business. The Senate adjourned at 8:45 pm.
