Call for Applications for a University-wide
MORE-EFFECTIVE-WRITING (MEW) WORKSHOP SUMMER PROGRAM
With a grant from the Provost's Program Fund, the Writing
Across the Curriculum (WAC) Committee is seeking faculty applications for a university-wide More Effective Writing (MEW) program.
Ten (10) faculty members from throughout the university will receive a $1500 stipend each to participate in the program from
May 22 through June/16. The workshop schedule during the last
week will not conflict with the summer school schedule.
During the workshop-preparation stage (May 22-26) , participants will read pedagogical and theoretical background materials
about writing across the curriculum as well as about methods and
techniques specific to their field. Faculty also will create a
schemata of what they believe represents effective student writing.
They will assemble copies of their respective course syllabi and
samples of the writing commonly used in their departmental courses.
From May 29 through June 9, participants will meet on campus
for ten (10) three-hour workshop sessions. During these morning
sessions, participants will discuss and develop concrete, specific
means for enhancing more effective writing on campus, in their departments, and in their courses. The workshop coordinator will
initiate discussion and provide suggestions for possible courses
of action. However, the focus will be on the participants' hands-
on work for enhancing writing by faculty and students, the teaching of writing, and the evaluation of writing.
From June 12 to 16, participants will develop specific plans
for further enhancing more effective writing throughout the Stetson
community. As a focus for this planning, the group will meet requ-
larly to develop, write, and revise a proposal designed to fund a
full WAC Program at Stetson University. This proposal is to be
submitted to an outside agency, such as the Fund for the Improvement
of Postsecondary Education.
Participants will submit a brief report assessing the MEW Summer Program and indicating their plans for enhancing writing on
campus. A one-session follow-up meeting will be held in the Spring
of 1990 to determine the success of their plans and to compare their
experiences while striving to create more effective writing on campus,
