ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Humanities Critical Theory Group meets at 3:00 p.m. today Friday, March 30, at the
Witek's. Topic: "Laugh of the Medusa" by Cixous in Adams and Searle, Critical Theory

Dr. Jean Ohlsson Rickman, Assistant Professor of Music, and Dr. Michael Rickman,
Associate Professor of Music, will present a recital of French flute music tonight
Friday, March 30, in Elizabeth Hall. The program begins at 8:00 p.m. and includes
works for flute and piano, flute and organ, and flute alone. The Stetson community is

Collegial Seminar sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences on Monday, April 2,
will feature a presentation by Dr. Richard Wood, Department of Economics, entitled
"The Impact of Mothers' Education on Child Mortality Rates in Jesus, Peru." This is a
report and preliminary paper based on interviews with 100 mothers in Jesus, Peru.
Jesus is a small Andean community. The special feature of this research is that
Richard's wife, Graciela, conducted the interviews with him. The research led to the
following results. Statistical analysis of the data suggests that the more years of
education a mother has completed, the lower the mortality rate of her children is.
The impact of a mother's education on mortality rates was considerably more important
than that of her husband. Other variables analyzed to explain child death rates
included the number of births, the age of the oldest child, and the location of the
family's residence—whether inside or outside the community center.
All interested persons are welcome to bring a lunch to the Private Dining Room at
