ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Stetson Jazz Ensemble is sponsoring a two-day residency by nationally renowned
saxophonist, Jack Wilkins, on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28. Jack Wilkins
is the Director of Jazz Studies and Saxophone Instructor at the Oberlin Conservatory
of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. While on campus, Mr. Wilkins will be working with Stetson
students in the areas of jazz improvisation, ensemble playing, and saxophone
techniques. On Saturday night, he will be the featured soloist with the Stetson Jazz
Ensemble in a concert at the Edmunds Center. From: David Schmidt, School of Music
"China's Democratic Imperative—the Role of Law in China's Modernization" is the title
of the presentation to be made at the next Collegial Seminar by Professor W. Gary
Vause of the Stetson College of Law. This will consist of a capsule review of China's
modernization efforts with special attention to the importance of replacing the "rule
of man" with the "rule of law" in that country. Dr. Vause observed the student
demonstrations last spring that led to the Beijing massacre and he will relate some of
his personal experiences based on teaching, research, and travel in China. Bring a
lunch to the Private Dining Room on Monday, April 30, any time after noon. The
presentation will begin at 12:15. Coffee and dessert provided by Dean Gary Maris

The Stetson Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa is sponsoring a lecture by Dr. George Shriver on
Monday, April 30, at 7:00 p.m. in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building. Dr.
Shriver is a magna cum laude graduate of Stetson in the class of 1953 and a charter
member of Omicron Delta Kappa. He is a history professor at Georgia Southern College
and the author of several distinguished books. He will be initiated Monday into the
Stetson Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The topic of his lecture will be "Free Should the
Scholar Be—Free and Brave." The lecture is open to the public without charge.

Composer Alexander Raskatov will present his final lecture of the semester on
Wednesday evening, May 2, at 7:00 p.m. in room 352 of Presser Hall. He will talk
about the newly re-established Association for Contemporary Music-2 (ACM-2). The
original ACM was founded in 1923. It came under severe criticism after the rise of
Stalin and was disbanded in 1931. The charter of the new organization was signed by
Raskatov and nine colleagues in Moscow in January, 1990. A reception sponsored by the
Artists and Lecturers Committee will follow the lecture.
