The National Endowment for the Humanities will offer 84 seminars
this summer in various disciplines of the humanities and the humanistic social sciences. College teachers who are selected to particpate
in the program will receive a stipend of $2,700 to cover travel
expenses to and from the seminar location, books and other research
expenses and living expenses for the eight weeks during which the
seminars are offered. Areas included are: American and Afro-American
Studies, Anthropology, Area Studies (Religion, Nationalism and Conflict
in South Asia: Ethnic and Religious Minorities in the Middle East
and Central Asia: Power and Class in Africa: Marxism and Communism
in China), Art History, Classics, Communications, Comparative Literature, Composition and Rhetoric, Drama, Economics, English and
American Literature, Film, Folklore, History, Legal Studies, Linguistics, Literary Theory and Criticism, Medieval Studies, Modern
Languages (French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish), Music,
Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, Science-Technology
and Human Values, Sociology, Urban Studies, Women's Studies.
Each seminar will be conducted by a major scholar at a major research
center. (For example, Herbert Blau will conduct a seminar entitled
"Performance Theory: Problems in Contemporary Theater" at the University
of Wisconsin. Alvin B. Kerman will teach "Literature as a Social Institution, 17 50 to the Present" at Princeton University. Robert Brentano
will teach a seminar in "Medieval Local History" at the American
Academy in Rome. Leonard M. Thompson will offer "The Political
Mythology of Race" at Yale University. Robert C. Coburn will teach
"The Metaphysics of Identity" at the University of Washington.) The
