Women's Council Report on Gender Equity
Last year, the Women's Council presented a report on women's issues and gender equity at Stetson to the
President's Staff and the Student Life Committee of the Board of Trustees. The report explores these
issues within the context of national conversations and trends, and it concludes with five general
recommendations:
1) Assign responsibility for developing and advocating goals of gender equity, education, and
awareness to those with the authority to implement change or to hold others in administrative
positions accountable for making change;
2) Promote a better a understanding of women's and gender equity issues though education,
discussion, and distribution of information;
3) Explore and promote ways that Stetson can become more responsive to family needs and encourage
a healthy balance between work and family life;
4) Work to increase the number, status, and visibility of women in responsible, professional, and
decision-making positions; and
5) Develop increasingly effective ways of identifying women's concerns and of responding to those
concerns in policies, procedures, and practices.
These recommendations have been adopted by the President's Staff. The full text report is now available
online at http://www.stetson.edu/"kkaivola/women.html. Questions, comments, and responses can be
directed to Dr. Karen Kaivola (Unit 8300; x7726; [email protected]).
