ANNOUNCEMENTS
UNIVERSITY FACULTY MEETING -TODAY, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2001, from 11:45 a.m. -1:15 p.m. in the
Stetson Room. The agenda includes a report from the Faculty Compensation Committee. A light lunch will be
served beginning at 11:45 a.m. From: Michael Branton, Chair, Faculty Senate
Honor System Proposal. A draft of the Honor System Proposal for Stetson University, DeLand Campus, is now on
the Academic Affairs website (www.stetson.edu/offices/academicaffairs/). This draft represents substantial work
last year by a faculty-student Values Council Task Force charged with examining the importance of a culture of
honor to a University centered on values.
This Honor System would force us to meet regularly-new students as well as senior professors-to talk about the
importance of integrity in our scholarly pursuits. An Honor System will not end cheating, of course, and it will
barely inconvenience determined cheaters. But it can help most of us to think most of the time about why
integrity matters, to us individually and to our University.
Brett Barrowman is coordinating the review of the Proposal for the Student Government Association. The Council
of Deans is eager for a faculty member or members who would be willing to serve on this year's Task Force to
examine the Proposal and bring it to a vote. From: Grady Ballenger
