ANNOUNCEMENTS
Live in Elizabeth Hall-Friday, October 1, 7:30 p.m. mezzo soprano Jane Christeson, and pianist Michael Rickman
will present a program of 20th century music. Selections include a staged scene from Benjamin Britten's opera
Turn of the Screw," and works by Charles Ives, Joaquin Rodrigo, and Florida composer David Isley. Christeson
and Rickman will be joined by flutist Jean West, and soprano Dr. Eugenia Garrity of the University of Central
Florida.
Violinist and electronic music composer/performer Jon Rose will perform Sunday, October 3, 3:00 p.m. in Elizabeth
Hall. The Hyperstring project pushes the envelope of musical expression through the use of accelerometers and
bow-pressure sensors measuring the physicality of high-speed improvisation. Rose's computers, samplers and bow
movements create a real-time counterpoint to his intense "free-jazz" violin performance. Rose, who resides in
Australia, has appeared on over 50 recordings. He has worked with many of the innovators in contemporary music
including Derek Bailey, Butch Morris, Fred Frith, Shelley Hirsh, Francis Marie Uitti, Connie Bauer, Joelle Leandre,
Toshinori Kondo, Barry Guy, Alvin Curran, David Moss and others.

THE FALL 1999 THURMAN LECTURE SERIES. Dr. Thelma Adair, Scholar, Theologian, will deliver a lecture entitled
"Probing the Millennium: The Role of African-American Women in the 21st Century," on Wednesday, October 6,
in the Stetson Room at 7:00 p.m. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend and join us in dialogue.
RESCHEDULED THURMAN LECTURE. The lecture by The Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, entitled "The Meaning
of the Civil Rights Movement for the 21 st Century" has been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 19, 7:00 p.m. in
