University Faculty Meeting~SR
UNIVERSITY FACULTY MEETING-today, Friday November 13, in the Stetson Room, noon -1:00 p.m. The topic
of the meeting is "Effective use of technology in a University setting." Shahram Amiri will be available to enter
into a dialog with us. This meeting will not be a presentation by Dr. Amiri, rather a conversation involving
everyone present. A light lunch will be served and available beginning 11:45 a.m. From: Jim Woodward
NEWS FROM THE RUSSIAN STUDIES CENTER. On Monday, November 16, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., in the Russian
Studies Center, a reception and exhibition of the work of Russian artist Aleksandr Kalugin, will be held. Along with
his wife Tamara, a journalist, Kalugin will be in attendance at the Russian Studies Center for the month of
November. Please see last week's edition of The Newsletter for more detailed information.

From November 18-20, the Russian Studies Center will host Boris Topornin, Director of the Institute of State and
Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He will speak Thursday afternoon, November 19, at 4:00 p.m. in the
John E. Johns Room of Elizabeth Hall on "The Struggle for Constitutionalism in Russia." The talk is particularly
timely given the recent formation by President Yeltsin of a ten-person commission to revise the Russian

Live in Elizabeth Hall, Friday, November 13, 7:30 p.m.—The Stetson Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Alvaro
Gomez. See last week's edition of The Newsletter for details.
Live in Elizabeth Hall, Saturday, November 14, 7:30 p.m. —Florida State clarinetist Frank Kowalsky, and pianist
Carolyn Bridger will perform here in exchange for a recital our clarinetist and pianist (Lynn Cholka and Michael
Rickman) performed at FSU last spring. They will play two Brahms sonatas. Three Intermezzi by Sir Charles Villier
Stanford, and Three Etudes on Gershwin arranged by Paul Harvey. Dr. Bridger directs the accompanying program
at Florida State, and Dr. Kowalsky is professor of clarinet. Dr. Kowalsky will spend the spring semester teaching
and doing research in London.
Live in Elizabeth Hall, Sunday, November 15, 4:00 p.m. —In the ninth year of the Florida Bandmasters Association
Hall of Fame, the FBA will honor Fred Humphries, former band director at Palm Beach Gardens High School,
Deerfield Beach High School, and Nova High School; and Joseph A. Lusk (posthumously) of Lake Worth High
School. The Hall of Fame concert features Stetson's Symphonic Wind Ensemble with director Bobby Adams and
five guest conductors. Two of the conductors are sons of the honorees, John Lusk and Mark Humphries. The SWE
will perform works by Vincent Persichetti, Armand Russell, Percy Grainger, Giuseppe Verdi, and Camille Saint-
Saens, in addition to a few marches. This event, which annually honors Florida high school band directors with
banquet, ceremony, concert, and reception, attracts around 70 Florida high school band directors to our campus

OPEN ENROLLMENT SEMINARS FOR 1999. The seminars will be hosted by the Office of Human Resources with
presentations provided by the Insurance Provider Representatives. In order to provide the campus community the
opportunity to attend each seminar, the Office of Human Resources has created a repetitive and rotating schedule.
