Live in Elizabeth Hall, Tuesday, September 8, 7:30 p.m.—Soprano Lloyd Linney will be joined by Michael Rickman,
organ, and Moffatt Williams, trumpet, for the first selection of her recital—an aria from Handel's oratorio Samson.
Lloyd and Michael (now on piano) will continue with songs by Schubert, Debussy, and Ernst Bacon, and the
popular aria, "Casta Diva" from Bellini's Norma. Debussy wrote his four early songs, Quatre Chansons de Jeunesse,
for Marie-Blanche Vasnier whose voice was extremely high, light, and flexible. The young Debussy was infatuated
with Mme. Vasnier and composed a total of thirteen songs for her. This work, as well as the arias by Handel and
Bellini, are examples of florid literature often performed by the coloratura soprano. Coloratura writing is often very
high and always virtuosic, with rapid runs, trills, and the like. The songs of Schubert and Bacon will provide
contrast to the high-flying coloratura literature. Bacon's brief set of songs is written to the poetry of Emily
Dickinson. This past summer Lloyd coordinated and performed for the third annual Vocal Performance and
Pedagogy Workshop, with Richard Miller of Oberlin College as guest clinician. In October she will present a recital

Dr. Jill Quadagno, sociologist and noted expert on Social Security will be lecturing here at Stetson on September
16, 1998, at 7:30 p.m. in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building. The topic of her lecture is "Should
Social Security be Privatized?" Dr. Quadagno is the Mildred and Claude Pepper Eminent Scholar in Social
Gerontology and a professor of sociology at Florida State University. The public is invited to the free lecture,
sponsored by Stetson's Health Care Issues Task Force. Students will receive cultural credit for attendance at this

MATHEMATICS COLLOQUIUM: Dr. James Keesling of the University of Florida, will talk on "Biomathematics"
Thursday, September 17, 4:00 p.m., Elizabeth 308. Mathematical modeling is used to describe many biological
processes, including the spread of disease and the growth of organisms. Dr. Keesling is part of the Visiting
Lecturer Series of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He will talk about the process of modeling
and current research in the area. Refreshments will be served, and students can earn cultural events credit.
