ANNOUNCEMENTS
MARINA PALEL, a contemporary Russian woman writer and critic will speak in English on "Contemporary Russian
Literature and Culture" on Tuesday, November 18, 1997, at 4:00 p.m. in the Russian Studies Center. A writer
and critic, she is a Russian Booker Prize nominee and currently in residence at the Iowa Writing Program. English

HOWARD THURMAN LECTURE SERIES. The Fall 1997 Howard Thurman Lecture Series continues Tuesday, 7:00
p.m. November 18 in Elizabeth Hall Chapel when Dr. Lawrence Jones, a professor, minister and author, will discuss
"A New Agenda: University and Community." The Reverend Marvin Chandler, a musician as well as pastor, will
speak at 7:00 p.m. November 24 on "The Legacy of Howard Thurman and the 21 st Century." He will again salute
the Reverend Thurman with music and a talk titled "A Musical Remembrance and Tribute to Howard Thurman" at
7:00 p.m. November 25 in the Pittman Room, Presser Hall. Bring a friend and enjoy the lectures and dialogues,
which are sponsored by Stetson's Howard Thurman Program. All are free and open to the public.

Live in Elizabeth Hall, Sunday, November 16, 4:00 p.m.-The annual Florida Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame
concert, in which outstanding Florida band directors are honored, will enter its eighth year. Winners of this year's
honors are Fred McCall (posthumously) and R. G. (Jeff) Bradford. McCall was director of bands at the University
of Miami and founder and director of the University of Miami Band and Orchestra Camp. Bradford (retired) was
Coordinator of Bands for Leon County and director of bands at Greensboro High School, Raa Junior High School,
and Godby (Tallahassee) High School. The Hall of Fame concert will feature Stetson's Symphonic Wind Ensemble
with director Bobby Adams and seven guest conductors. The SWE will perform three Fillmore marches, the Finale
of the Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4, Berlioz "March Hongroise," and Sousa's "Nobles of the Mystic Shrine."
This event-with banquet, ceremony, concert, and reception-attracts around 70 Florida high school band directors
