On Monday, October 20, the Chemistry Department is pleased to host Dr. Laura Captain (Stetson Class of '92)
of the Department of Chemistry at Emory University. Dr. Captain, who has just received her Ph.D. in Organic
Chemistry at Emory, will speak on "A Novel Synthetic Approach to HIV-1 Protease Inhibitors" at 7:00 p.m. in Room
221, Sage Hall. The public is invited to attend. From: Ken Everett
The Faculty Reading Hour will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge on Wednesday, October 22. Stetson
faculty members will be delivering dramatic readings from a variety of literary texts. As in the past, one can expect
the reading selections to range from the frivolous to the sublime. This is an official cultural event for the College
of Arts and Sciences, and all members of the Stetson community are invited to attend. From: Robert Boerth
GEORGE PAPPAS, Paintings. New exhibition at Duncan Gallery of Art. Next Friday, October 24, 1997, 6-8 pm,
George Pappas' oils paintings, drawings, and mixed media works will be featured in a solo exhibition to continue
through December 11th. Pappas has been an artist/educator for the past forty years, including teaching
appointments at U. of Northern Iowa, Penn State, and the University of South Florida, where he has been honored
with the rank of Professor Emeritus. His work is part of numerous private and public collections in the U.S. and
Canada, including that of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; in Florida is work is represented by Arts
on Douglas (New Smyrna Beach) and Clayton Galleries in Tampa. Opening reception is free and open to the public.
Mr. Pappas will give a lecture on Thursday, November 6 at 7 pm in the duPont-Ball Library, room 5L. Reception
and lecture are accepted Arts and Sciences cultural events.
Ceramics Artist Featured in Sampson Hall Foyer Gallery. Jenny Lou Sherburne, nationally-recognized Florida artist
known for her colorful floral ceramics, will have her works on display in Sampson Hall October 24 - December 11,
1997. Ms. Sherburne will conduct a hand-building demonstration of her sculptural ceramic techniques on
Thursday/Friday, October 23/24, 9 am - 4 pm, and present a lecture on Thursday, October 23, 7 pm in the duPont-
Ball Library, room 5L. Workshop and lecture are free and open to the public. Lecture is an accepted Arts and

POETRY READING. Please invite your students to attend a poetry reading by Rachel Hadas on Tuesday, October
28, at 8:00 a.m. in the Duncan Gallery in Sampson Hall. The reading is sponsored by the Artists and Lecturers
