ANNOUNCEMENTS
University Faculty Meeting-Friday, November 1. noon in Rinker Auditorium, Davis Hall. The agenda items include
a report from the Faculty Senate and discussion and vote on the 1997-98 calendar. Sandwiches and refreshments
will be served for an anticipated 75 people. You will recall at the last meeting there were not sufficient sandwiches
for the requested 75 servings, but we will make sure there are enough sandwiches this time.
1997-98 Academic Calendar
Please review the two options for our 1997-98 Academic Calendar, which are presented elsewhere in The
Newsletter. It is my intention to bring these to the November 1 Faculty Meeting. We will follow a procedure
similar to that of the October Faculty Meeting. After some brief general discussion I will call for a show of hands
to determine which calendar option will be placed on the floor for discussion. We will then turn our attention to
that option, with amendments welcome, bringing that option with amendments to a final vote. If it is rejected we
will turn to the other option and follow the same process.
As you review these two options please keep in mind the following points:
1. Option #1 is the same calendar as the past two years, except that Fall Semester starts and ends one week
later.
2. Option #2 eliminates the two-day Fall Break.
3. Option #2 may pose a serious problem with respect to Labor Day. After many years of requests we have
finally made Labor Day a University Holiday. This was universally applauded by our staff, who now look
forward to spending Labor Day with their families. Option #2, with Labor Day in the middle of Orientation,
would mean that many staff would have to work. This would be a hardship for our staff colleagues and would
have a budget impact because of overtime pay.
