Dear Faculty Member,
Be part of the team! QUEST and Residential Life
invite you to take part in the activities of Drug and Alcohol
Awareness Week: October 31-November 6, 1994. The theme this year
is "Power Up! Feel the Power of Positive Choices".
A 1993 study of Stetson students revealed that:
* 88% had used alcohol during the last year.
* 51% drink at least once a week.
* 37% reported drinking on campus.
* 22% drink on average 10 or more drinks each week.
How can you help? Here are some options for your consideration:
1. Work drug/alcohol issues into one of your subject matter
lectures. Assign homework that will get students thinking
about the drug and alcohol issue and the power they have to
make positive choices.
2. Invite a QUEST team member to come to the classroom and show a
video and lead a discussion.
3. Hang flyers promoting Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week on your
office or in your classroom. These will be made available by
QUEST members.
4. Support, if feasible, students taking part in "Dead Day".
This is a high visibility program that makes people take a
look at the seriousness of an issue, students have volunteered
to "die" to symbolize the number of people killed by alcohol
-related accidents each year - one every 22 minutes. The
student who is "dead" does not talk or interact with others
during their "dead time". This serves as a reminder of the
loss people would experience if someone they knew had been
killed. Students who take part in this activity are
responsible for discussing this with their professors prior to
any class where they are "dead".
Please call me at 8150 if I can assist you in your support of
your effort to help our students have the knowledge to make
positive choices.
