INVITATION TO FACULTY AND STAFF: The Cultural Studies Reading Group is an informal research and discussion
group for the interdisciplinary study of contemporary culture, criticism and phenomena. We generally meet every
three to four weeks to discuss readings/topics chosen by consensus. Past topics have included recent anthologies
on Cultural Studies, new religious movements, women's stand-up comedy, French theater, and criticism of
romance novels. All are welcome to attend and help shape our agenda.
Our next meeting will be Friday, October 7, at 4:30 p.m. at the home of Stephanie Athey (for address and
directions call ext. 7718 or 7720). We will be discussing sections of Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth:
Preface and "Concerning Violence," pp. 1-95 and in Black Skin. White Masks: "Introduction," pp. 7-14 and "The
Fact of Blackness," pp. 109-140. Both texts are currently on reserve at the Library--you may wish to photocopy

LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM COMMITTEE. For your information, the following faculty members
comprise the Latin American Studies Program Committee: Mario Aldana, Evans Johnson, Brian Kermath, Anne
Hallum, lliana Mankin, Ken McCoy, Bill Nylen, Kevin O'Keefe, John Schorr, Robert Sitler, and Richard Wood. John
Schorr is chairing this committee. If you desire any information about the new Latin American Studies major or

The Faculty Senate will meet at 6:45 p.m., Monday, October 10, in the Faculty Lounge of the Carlton Union
Building. Faculty wishing to attend, may do so. If you want to have dinner ($5) at 6:00 p.m. in the Private Dining

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP. A Grants and Information Workshop led by Mary Ann Lederhaus
will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 3:00 • 4:00 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. The purpose of the workshop
is to review procedures and criteria for applying for summer grants and sabbaticals. Summer Grant applications
are available in the Office of the Provost. A complete schedule of Professional Development Workshops for the
1994-95 academic is listed on page 2.
