UNIVERSITY FACULTY MEETING-Monday, November 15, 10:00 a.m., Rinker Auditorium, Davis Hall. The Mission
Statement presented below has been modified through discussions with the Faculty Senate on November 8, 1993.
I am bringing it to the Faculty for endorsement. Also, Leonard Nance, Chair of the Faculty Senate will give an
update of Senate issues.
STATEMENT OF MISSION
Our mission at Stetson University is to provide an excellent education in an intellectually challenging and
collaborative learning community. We pursue excellence through superior teaching, close student/faculty
interaction, creative and scholarly activity, and programs solidly grounded in liberal learning. We seek academically
talented students with leadership potential and records of personal growth and community service. We prepare
them for rewarding careers, selective graduate and professional programs, and a lifetime of learning. Stetson
pursues truth in an open and caring environment that is socially and religiously diverse. The University encourages
all members of its community to be morally sensitive and effective citizens committed to active forms of social
responsibility.
TWO SEMESTER CALENDAR UPDATE. I am continuing discussions with the Faculty Senate Executive Committee
and with the Academic Affairs Committee of the Student Government Association regarding a model two semester
calendar. I also met with a group of faculty who had organized Winter Term trips to see if we could preserve that
opportunity, in one form or another, in the new calendar. Discussions are proceeding in a constructive way. My
timetable is as follows:
1. In the next Newsletter I will present a draft model 1995-96 calendar, which will represent the current
state of discussions.
2. I will schedule an Open Forum in early December for general discussion of the model. More than one
session will be scheduled if necessary.
3. I plan to bring a proposal, modified as appropriate, to the February Faculty Meeting.
