CLAST TEST for Stetson Students
Grade Inventories Due to Registrar
Dr. Max Sherman-EHA
Max Sherman, Professor and Dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs (University of Texas-Austin),
will be the speaker at Encounter on Wednesday, October 6, 10:00 a.m, in Elizabeth Hall Auditorium. Previously
he was Special Counsel to the Governor of Texas and President of West Texas State University. Dean Sherman
holds numerous important posts nationally, including membership on The National Commission on State and Local
Public Service. Students in Pre-Law, Political Science, History, American Studies, and Business will be particularly
interested. His topic will be "Political Ethics--A Contradiction in Terms?"

CULTURAL STUDIES COLLOQUIUM. A reminder: The first meeting of the cultural studies colloquium will be held
at 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 1, at Karen Kaivola's. We will be discussing the introduction "Clothes Make the Man"
and the chapter "Breaking the Code" from Vested Interests: Cross-Dressina and Cultural Anxiety. Photocopies
of these chapters are on faculty reserve in the Library. For more information, contact Karen Kaivola (English

The first Collegial Seminar of the semester will meet at noon on Friday, October 8, in the Private Dining Room.
Drs. Roberta Favis (Art History) and Paul Steeves (History) will make a dual presentation with three purposes: To
convey what they learned in their respective NEH-sponsored summer programs, to describe their experiences in
these programs, and to point colleagues in the direction of their own participation in future programs. Dr. Favis
participated in the Summer Institute at Vassar College, "Hudson River Valley Images and Texts: Constructing a
National Culture in Nineteenth Century America," and Dr. Steeves was at the Summer Seminar at the Russian State
Humanities University, Moscow, "Church and Society in Russia, 1860-1930." Coffee and dessert served
